Man In The Moon Birthday Cake

The Man In The Moon Birthday Cake was created on or around 2010-02-05.

Man In The Moon Birthday Cake This cake was first inspired by the pegasus cake in Debbie Brown's "Magical Cakes" book, and a 3D moon face from another cake book.  But when the unicorn pegasus took a tumble and broke into pieces, I had to use some creativity to alter the cake since there wasn't enough time to mold and dry another unicorn pegasus (I added a toy unicorn to the cake for the celebration).

Man In The Moon Birthday Cake  I found these neat star sprinkles in my local cake store and couldn't resist using them on this cake to make swirls on the sides of the cake.

Man In The Moon Birthday Cake The moon was a carved sphere from 6 inch chocolate cake rounds.  It was covered with white fondant and craters created using a ball tool for making gumpaste flowers.  I then added black and white fondant facial features.  The surprised look on the moon's face was for its reaction to seeing the unicorn pegasus flying around the cake.

Man In The Moon Birthday Cake The bottom tier was a vanilla cake with lemon and raspberry buttercream fillings.  The middle tier was chocolate cake with peanut butter filling.
